In Handbook for a Humanistic Astrologer , michael Meyer says that Saturn is the ego.
I thought the moon/cancer/4th was the ego?
Could I ask for a clarification on this from EA perspective?
I’ll quote what he says specifically:
“ the dyad of identification and adaptation is the symbolic molding force behind the establishment (moon ) of the ego (Saturn) and its gradual development (moon) into a distinct individual (Saturn)”.
Hi Dominikas,
Since the quote you are bringing forward is not an EA source, it's not necessary or helpful to compare it with the EA teachings. There will be many discrepancies between EA and others systems and this forum isn't the place for working those discrepancies out. What you do on your own is of course fine, but on this forum please keep it to EA.
If you wish to delve into this more deeply from an EA point of view, I suggest reviewing some of JWG's teachings on Saturn and the Moon on the archived message board. Then, if you have a need for further clarification, please be welcome to ask more questions on this topic.
Thanks Ari
Sorry about that
I was referred to that book on this forum for more foundational knowledge of astrology as I don’t have an astrology background.
I will check out the link for sure thank you
I understand, that can get confusing.
Let me know if you'd like some suggestions for beginners resources on EA for those who are new to astrology in general. Happy to share. You can reach out to me directly or even post a new thread if you'd like.
You know as a Leo moon with Saturn in the 7th the ego makes a lot of sense 😁 Micheal "Buzz" Meyers was a brilliant astrologer, thank you for bringing him up.
In Evolutionary Astrology (EA), the ego is associated with the Moon, the 4th house, and the Cancer archetype because what we’re really studying is the phenomenon of one’s immediate self-awareness in each moment. There’s a distinct line between the inner world of subjectivity and the outer world of objectivity, and we are consciously aware of both states. The ego is the awareness of that dividing line, as well as the constant interchange between these two states.
In EA, Saturn is understood as the structure of reality itself—the dense, physical world we inhabit. This creates a natural binary: the outer world, represented by Capricorn (Saturn), and the inner world, represented by Cancer (Moon). This binary is what truly establishes the ego structure. We can see the reflection of the inner world through the boundaries and definitions held by Saturn. The Moon represents our conscious awareness of the inner world, and it is through this awareness that the ego takes shape. The ego cannot be solely defined by the Saturn archetype because boundaries (Saturn) lack meaning unless they are animated by our inner world (Moon).
Jeffrey Wolf Green also used the analogy of a film projector lens to explain the ego structure. Just as a film cannot be projected onto a screen without a lens, the image of the self comes into conscious awareness through the reflection of the inner world.
Finally, the Moon can be seen as the emotional thread that connects us to our day-to-day, week-to-week, and month-to-month experiences. These ongoing emotional experiences form a kind of memory bank, contributing to the evolving sense of self that you carry forward. Over time, this collection of emotional imprints shapes the lens through which you connect with the world around you.
Wow this was a beautiful explanation thank you. I’m going to read it over a few times.i thought ego was the image we have of ourselves. As this person we create in order to survive this physical world. Which made me wonder if there’s another “us” under the ego.
If ego/moon “ represents our conscious awareness of the inner world, and it is through this awareness that the ego takes shape” it sounds more like a process than an image we have of ourselves. Or maybe through time it evolves into a self image (gets more crystallized) and therefore it can be both.
I really want to understand this on the deepest level and I don’t want to bother anyone with my questions but I don’t want to mislabel something which opens too much room for error.
Hi @dominikas_103 here are a couple of threads and an article on the ego that may help you to flesh/carve out more of your understanding:
